Working With Claude Skills: Teach AI to Do the Job Your Way

Most people use AI the same way every time: explain the task, explain the format, explain the standards, then fix what comes back. Skills let you teach Claude once and get consistent results after that.

What a skill is

A skill teaches Claude how to do a specific job your way. It is a small folder built around a main instructions file, called SKILL.md, plus anything that job needs: templates, brand assets or examples to follow. Think of it as an onboarding guide for a new hire. It captures the steps, standards and know-how so the work comes out right every time.

Claude comes with built-in skills for PowerPoint, Excel, Word and PDF, and you can add custom skills for your own workflows and brand.

The one thing to remember

You do not push a button or call a skill by name. You describe the task in plain language. Claude reads what each available skill is for, and when your request matches one, it loads those instructions and follows them.

How Claude uses a skill

  • It scans what is available. Every skill carries a short description of what it is for.
  • Your request triggers a match. When your prompt lines up with a skill's purpose, Claude pulls in that skill's full instructions.
  • It follows the playbook. Your formatting, your brand, your steps, and the skill stays in effect as you refine.

To make the match reliable, name three things in your request: the deliverable, the subject and the format you want back. "Help me with marketing" may not point anywhere useful. "Write a short post for small-business owners about online safety, ending with a call to action" gives the skill what it needs.

Build your own in five steps

  • Pick one repeatable task you do the same way each time, like a report, a quote or a type of post.
  • Capture the know-how the way you would brief a new hire. Be specific about what good looks like.
  • Save it as a SKILL.md with a clear name and a one-line description of when to use it.
  • Add the supporting pieces: templates, brand assets, example outputs or sample data.
  • Add it, then test it with a real request and refine.

You do not have to start from a blank page. Describe your process to Claude and ask it to draft the skill, then adjust the wording until it does the job your way.

A word on safety

Only add skills from sources you trust. A skill tells Claude how to act, so treat it like any other software you install. On Team and Enterprise plans, an administrator can provision approved skills for everyone, which keeps the whole team on the same standards.
